Giving back to the hospital

Each year the League of Friends of the John Radcliffe Hospital returns its profits to the hospital in the form of grants for essential equipment and services that otherwise would not be purchased. Luckily the cafés are increasingly popular with staff, patients and visitors alike, so as our turnover increases so does the amount of money that we are able to give back to help the hospital.

In 2017/18 we awarded 39 grants totalling £202,000, which means that you bought a lot of cups of coffee and tea and ate lots of cakes and rolls! Thank you!

By buying your tea and coffee from our cafés, this is what you have helped the hospital buy:

  • Specialist counselling services for parents suffering trauma or loss during pregnancy
  • A multi-function hygiene chair to assist trauma patients
  • Ultrasound scanners
  • A NIPPY Clearway cough assistor device for the physiotherapy department
  • Improved training for doctors and midwives using a new life-like simulator for complicated and breech births
  • Additional pressure relieving mattresses for the cardiac wards
  • Support for staff training
  • Help with recruitment and retention of nursing staff
  • And lots, lots more!

How to apply for a grant

We encourage staff in all departments to apply for a grant for anything that would help them to look after patients better, to assist with patient comfort or to enable them to have additional or specialist training. The process is easy and a decision is often made within weeks.
